11) Give ‘em Props! ‘Props’ is the theatrical term for ‘properties’ or things an actor uses to tell the story. A table and chair are part of the ‘Set’ while a walking cane and a basket of goodies are ‘props’. Actors need to get used to using whatever props they’ll be using as soon as possible so I usually try to source these from the beginning.

Actors are responsible for keeping track of their own props and should have a special place for them when they are finished using them. I also tell the students to keep their hands off other people’s props – I’d say, “Hands off O.P.P.” and they’d say “Yeah you know me”…most of them, and maybe most of you are too young to know the reference to the 90s hip hop song, but I got a kick out of it.

12) All the world’s a stage. To stage or not to stage, that is the question. As mentioned earlier, you do not need an elevated stage but if you do have one, be sure it is safe! That said, what you will be using as the backdrop or the SET to your story must also be safe and practical. It’s all very well to have an actual balcony for Juliet to call to her Romeo from, but ensure that whomever is building it is qualified, and that it is not going to endanger your cast.
